CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) is ranked among unsaturated fatty acids Omega-6. It is one of the fatty acids produced by animals. It naturally appears in beef, milk and dairy products, in mutton, sheep milk and its products (they have the highest concentration of CLA, but are less accessible). Relatively high concentrations of CLA are observed in fermented dairy products as well. Human milk does not contain CLA; therefore, we can only obtain it from food.

An average intake of CLA in the diet is 0,4 -1,4 g/per day – much less than the suggested dose which has a positive impact on our health, i.e. approximately 3 g/per day.

CLA plays an important role in many metabolic processes in cells. In our food, especially in highly-processed food, there is less and less of this substance. Conjugated Linoleic Acid has an influence on the reduction of body mass, shows an ability to reduce fat tissue, and regulates metabolic rate. It reduces fat deposition and increases its usage as energy. It stimulates the transport of fatty acids to mitochondria ,where they are burnt up. CLA is a very strong antioxidant, with 100 times higher anti-oxidative activity than vitamin E, thus helping to minimize the formation of free radicals and delaying the ageing process. It improves bone mineralization and normalizes the glucose level in the blood.

  • high doses of CLA can result in fatty liver
  • supplementation can sometimes cause nausea, diarrhoea, and other intestinal discomfort
  • pregnant women should not supplement conjugated linoleic acid without consulting a doctor.
